Executive Director

Gayle Lawn-Day

 

PhD: Public Policy and Research Methodology, University of Oklahoma
MPA: Public Finance and Budgeting, University of Oklahoma
BSBA: Marketing and Human Resources, Michigan Technological University

New to Migrant Health Promotion as of September 2007, Gayle Lawn-Day our Executive Director, brings significant administrative experience to the organization.  As a former Executive Vice President, Chief Operations Officer, and Chief Financial Officer of various institutions of higher education, her experience managing complex organizations, multi-dimensional budgets, and developing and implementing long range planning are key organizational assets.

 

Texas Associate Director

Graciela Camarena

 

Graciela Camarena is responsible for representing Migrant Health Promotion regionally and nationally, contributing to the financial development of the agency, and overseeing the health promotion programs that run out of the Texas office. Graciela facilitates communication between the Texas and Michigan offices and works with the Executive Director to set the direction and general management of Migrant Health Promotion. She ensures the highest quality work possible to improve the health status of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their communities. Graciela has been part of the Migrant Health Promotion family since 1993, first as a farmworker leader, a Camp Health Aide, Promotora de Salud, Program Coordinator, Program Specialist, Regional Capacity-Building Director, and now her current position as Associate Director. Graciela is a recent graduate from the University of Texas Pan American earning a Bachelor in Social Work.

Tori Booker

Tori Booker, MSW, MPH, oversees the Michigan office and programs while providing capacity-building assistance to Migrant and Community Health Centers nationwide. She has been an integral part of the Migrant Health Promotion team since 1993. Tori spearheaded the first expansion of the Camp Health Aide Program model outside of the Midwest, and she was instrumental in the development of Migrant Health Promotion's teen health and mental health program models and resources. She is Chilean-American and has focused her work on Latino health. Tori received Masters degrees in Social Work and Public Health from the University of Michigan. Prior to her work with Migrant Health Promotion, she planned and implemented substance abuse prevention programs for Latino and Anglo populations in Illinois and worked at a community-based health clinic in Chile.

 

Associate Director for Special Projects

Phillis Engelbert

Phillis Engelbert joined the Migrant Health Promotion staff in January 2007 and provides programmatic, leadership, administrative, and development support to both offices. She is a capable administrator and supervisor with over 20 years of community organizing experience. Prior to joining the staff of Migrant Health Promotion, Phillis spent five years as executive director of Michigan Peaceworks – a nonprofit education and advocacy organization. She is also an accomplished author, having written 28 volumes of reference and text books for youth on a range of science and social science topics, in the process earning five prestigious awards. Other related experiences include travel and journalism throughout Mexico and Central America, teaching a course on civil rights at a public-schools’-sponsored academy, working as an advocate for Michigan prisoners, and serving as editor for a monthly magazine.
