Farmworker Advisory Council
The mission of the Farmworker Advisory Council is to provide guidance, ideas and suggestions to Migrant Health Promotion from the farmworkers' point of view.
The Council consists of approximately ten farmworkers or former farmworkers who meet twice a year. The group reviews changes in programs and new ideas, identifies additional health concerns and generally lends its voice in order to ensure that Migrant Health Promotion remains responsive to the needs of farmworkers and their communities.
In 2004, nine members of the Farmworker Advisory Council completed an inventory of their experiences and skills, which illustrates why their input is essential to the work of Migrant Health Promotion:
- Members have migrated a collective 180 years.
- Members migrate with a total of 85 family members.
- Members migrate to 21 states (Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin).
- Members have contributed in over 500 different ways to the well-being of their communities in the past year: serving as Promotores and Promotoras, providing transportation, raising funds, donating time and money, interpreting and other ways.
