Hesperian Foundation

The Hesperian Foundation is a non-profit publisher of books and educational materials that help people take the lead in their own health care and organize to improve health conditions in their communities. Simply written, heavily illustrated, and developed in collaboration with groups around the world, their books contain a wealth of life-saving information on diagnosing and treating a broad range of health problems.

 

Rural Women's Health Project: Fotonovelas

The fotonovela, a traditional print medium found in Mexico and Latin American, is a series of photographs combined with dialogue boxes similar to the comic book format. The fotonovela format has been used successfully in addressing health issues throughout the world. In the United States and Mexico, the RWHP utilizes the popular fotonovelas with communities to present health messages, document the work of communities and unify communities to improve individual and community well-being.

 

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is the federal agency responsible for conducting research and making recommendations for the prevention of work-related injury and illness. The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 created both NIOSH and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA is in the U.S. Department of Labor and is responsible for developing and enforcing workplace safety and health regulations. NIOSH is in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is an agency established to help assure safe and healthful working conditions for working men and women by providing research, information, education, and training in the field of occupational safety and health.  Download NIOSH's booklet, Simple Solutions: Ergonomics for Farm Workers here.

 

Migrant Clinicians Network: Training Manual on Domestic Violence

Family violence is a public health epidemic affecting women of all races, classes, and ethnic origins. Migrant women may face special challenges to obtaining domestic violence services and escaping violent relationships.  Migrant Clinicians Network has prepared educational resources for Promotores(as) and community health workers to become informed about family violence.  For a list of additional resources, click here.

 

National Center for Farmworker Health, Inc.

Breast and Cervical Cancer educational materials available for free download.  Additional materials such as articles and flipcharts dealing with cancer prevention may be ordered through the NCFH website. 

 

Farmworker Health Services, Inc.

A Health Education Module flipchart covering Sexually Transmitted Diseases is available for purchase through the FHSI website. This educational tool is ideal for outreach workers providing health education on sexually transmitted diseases. It was pilot-tested in Florida and New Jersey. The flipchart contains visuals and graphics that were designed by farmworkers and relate directly to farmworkers.

 

Wake Forest University School of Medicine

Investigators at Wake Forest University School of Medicine have conducted a program of community-based participatory research and intervention since 1996 to address the health of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families.  This research has addressed pesticide exposure and safety, green tobacco sickness, occupational skin disease, nutrition and food security, dental and oral health, and mental health.  In addition to over 70 peer-reviewed papers published in the scientific literature, this group has developed culturally and educationally competent health materials and programs.  Educational programs have included Promotor(a) programs focused on pesticide safety and nutrition-food security.  Materials developed for Promotor(a) programs are available for download from the website and on CD.
