Migrant Health Promotion supports Promotores' and Promotoras' professional development with training, newsletters and networking opportunities.

Upcoming Intensive Trainings - Following the Western Migrant Stream Forum in Sacramento, California, January 28-29, 2007

 

Migrant Health Promotion is pleased to offer two post-conference Promotor(a) Program-focused intensive trainings immediately followin the 2007 Western Migrant Stream Forum in Sacramento, California.  These trainings will be facilitated by Migrant Health Promotion staff, and are co-sponsored by the Northwest Regional Primary Care Association and the Bureau of Primary Health Care, Health Resources and Services Administration, Department of Health and Human Services.

  • Training One - Promotores(as) de Salud: Leadership with Head, Hands and Heart  Sunday, January 28, 2007, 1:00 - 5:00 pm

Designed for Promotores(as), but also beneficial to clinicians or administrators who supervise or work closely with Promotores(as).  Scholarships are available for Promotores(as) wishing to attend "Promotores(as) de Salud: Leadership with Head, Hands and Heart."  Scholarship application deadline is January 5, 2007.  Download application in English or español.

  • Training Two - Promotores(as) 201: Promotor(a) Programs of Excellence  Sunday-Monday, January 28-29, 2007, 1:00-5:00 pm and 8:30 am-5:00 pm

Designed for Promotor(a) Program Coordinators, administrators or clinicians who wish to start or sustain a Promotor(a) program.  While the facilitators will include a brief overview of Promotor(a) programs, participants would benefit from having some prior familiarity with the health promoter, or Promotor(a), model.

 

 

 

Training

For over 20 years, Migrant Health Promotion has been training Promotores(as) in the core skills, knowledge of health issues and linkages to health and social service systems necessary for effective Promotor(a) work. Our facilitators use adult education and Popular Education methods to make learning fun, memorable and a vehicle for social justice. Experienced Promotores(as) and representatives of other organizations co-facilitate with Migrant Health Promotion staff, ensuring that training is relevant to the Promotores(as) and to the community.

Migrant Health Promotion provides training for Promotores(as) on a variety of topics. On-site training and training materials are available. Promotor(a) training topics often include:

  • Promotor(a) roles
  • Promotor(a) skills:
    • Leadership
    • Home visits and other outreach
    • Health education materials and methods
    • Effective communication
    • Popular Education, group facilitation and public speaking
    • Personal safety
    • Professionalism and ethics
    • Problem solving
    • Cultural competency
    • Data collection and evaluation
  • The health and social service system (available services, collaboration with other service providers, eligibility, application procedures, referrals and follow-up)
  • Specific health topics (physical, mental and behavioral health issues)

Experienced Promotores(as) who migrate to the Rio Grande Valley in Texas are eligible to participate in Migrant Health Promotion's Colonia Health Worker Programs.
