Training & Support for Program Staff

"The training was excellent and provided me with the resources needed to begin the first steps of creating a Promotora program at our clinic. It was nice meeting and talking to others who are also developing Promotora programs or looking at developing them in the future."

-Participant, Migrant Health Promotion's "Building Blocks" workshop

Migrant Health Promotion supports the development of Promotor(a) programs with training and other professional development activities.

Training to Start or Strengthen Your Promotor(a) Program

Migrant Health Promotion provides on-site training and phone consultation to organizations implementing the Promotor(a) program model. We work closely with organizations to determine the topics and develop a personalized training that addresses the needs of participants. Generally, Migrant Health Promotion provides an overview of the structure, philosophy and benefits of a Promotor(a) program to all staff and to representatives of other organizations who will work with the Promotores and Promotoras. Then we work more intensely with the Promotor(a) program staff on topics such as:

  • History of the Promotor(a) model
  • Roles and skills of Promotores(as)
  • Health outcomes and other benefits of Promotor(a) programs
  • Community assessment
  • Program planning and work plan design
  • Fundraising, grant proposals and other resources
  • Program objectives
  • Recruitment of caring, competent Promotores(as)
  • Interactive, informative Promotor(a) training
  • Support and supervision of Promotores(as)
  • Program management (stipends, contracts, etc.) and organizational systems
  • Program evaluation
  • Documentation of success

Some organizations prefer that we visit them at their program site, while others prefer to send staff to Migrant Health Promotion to see experienced Program Coordinators or Promotores(as) in action.

Migrant Health Promotion regularly provides presentations and intensive trainings for Promotor(a) program staff at migrant health conferences. These opportunities are announced on the Promotor(a) Program News Email Group.  For information on intensive trainings following the 2007 Western Migrant Stream Forum, click here.

For more information on Promotor(a) program design and implementation, download the "Camp Health Aide Program Overview." For a more detailed description, review any of the program implementation guides from Materials & Tools.

To request training, consultation or a visit to one of our programs contact the Capacity-Building Team.
