Designing Your Program

"We consider Migrant Health Promotion the experts to help us expand our outreach to include preparing farmworkers and Hispanics to help their own communities."-T. Sam Puckett, Rural Medical Services, Parrotsville, TN

Migrant Health Promotion's Capacity-Building Team provides face-to-face and phone consultation to help you decide how the Promotor(a) model fits with your organization and community and to plan for a successful program. We begin with key questions about your community:

  • What are the strengths and challenges of your community? Which aspects will the Promotores and Promotoras address?
  • Who do you plan to serve? How many people will you target? Do they migrate? Where do they live? Work? What age, gender or ethnicity will you focus on?
  • Which clinical or social services will your Promotor(a) program complement?

Based on this information, the Capacity-Building Team will help you adapt one of Migrant Health Promotion's Program Models to your community. As you design your program, we can help you:

  • Choose a health focus for the program
  • Develop goals and objectives
  • Set a program timeline
  • Determine how many Promotores(as) and staff you will need
  • Establish a budget for the resources needed for your program
  • Create a work plan
  • Develop an evaluation plan

Successful adaptations include seasonal and year-round programs, coalition-based programs and teen programs as well as mental health, occupational health, women's health, diabetes and other issue-specific programs.
