ResearchPromotores(as) Conduct Eye Injury and Illness Research
In collaboration with the University of Illinois at Chicago, Promotores and Promotoras in Illinois and Southeastern Michigan investigated eye injuries and illnesses in farmworkers. The Promotores(as) worked with university researchers to conduct a qualitative study and to collect surveillance information. They helped develop, pilot-test and administer a questionnaire. The Promotores(as) played an instrumental role recruiting participants for the study and gaining baseline and follow-up data. They also completed observations of farmworkers to determine the percentage wearing safety glasses before, during and after an educational intervention.
The American Journal of Industrial Medicine accepted an article with the results of this study; it appears in the December 2004 edition (Volume 46, Issue 6).
