Promotoras Conduct HIV/AIDS Research
In collaboration with the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, four Promotoras in the La Frontera (the Border) Project completed 1,451 surveys in one year. They documented HIV/AIDS incidence and knowledge among farmworkers in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, and they mapped over 250 previously unmapped, border colonias.
"La Desesperación: Migrant and Seasonal Farmworkers Living with HIV/AIDS," appeared in the March/April 2000 issue of the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care1 and featured results of the La Frontera Project. Analysis of interviews with HIV-positive farmworkers revealed the "desperation" of their situation, including a severe lack of acceptance, resources and treatment options.
